Q: Who can attend Ch1Con?
A: Anyone middle school through undergraduate age (whether you’re in school or not), so approximately ages eleven through twenty-three. (If you’re not in that age range, let us know! We love to make exceptions.)
Q: I’m under eighteen. Do I need a chaperone?
A: While you’ll need the permission of your legal guardian to attend if you’re under eighteen, you will NOT need a chaperone actually with you at the conference. Think of it sort of like a day camp. (And running with that concept: be aware that you and your legal guardian are responsible for transportation and lodging throughout the weekend.)
Q: What do I need to bring?
A: All you need is something with which to take notes, a plan for lunch (details about your options are listed under the “2016 Conference” section), and any books you already own which you’d like the speakers to sign!
Q: How should I dress?
A: We like to keep things casual, so feel free to wear your t-shirt and jeans. (We would say “wear whatever you want,” but then there’s always that one person who feels the need to show up in a birthday suit.)
Q: What’s this “Write It” thing everybody keeps talking about?
A: That’s a reference to the Scholastic’s Write It online forums for teenage writers, which is where a lot of the girls who run Ch1Con first met. We call ourselves “Write Iters” (or “WIers” for short). We’re a totally cool (and not creepy) bunch, we promise.
Q: What’s Ch1Con’s connection to Teens Can Write, Too?
A: Towards the end of TCWT’s reign as an awesome blog for young writers, we were partners in bringing kickbutt opportunities to the kickbutt young writers of the world. (Also, the Ch1Con team all wrote for TCWT when we weren’t busy doing Ch1Con stuff.)
Q: What’s this about a man-eating hamster being the Ch1Con mascot?
A: Oh, you mean Larry? Larry the Man-Eating Hamster? Don’t worry, he’s just a puppet. No real danger. (Or is there?)
Q: When and where will the 2017 conference occur?
A: The 2017 conference will take place Saturday, August 5th at the SPACE by Doejo event center in downtown Chicago, IL, next to the After-Words bookshop.
Q: How much will the conference cost?
A: The early bird registration price is $49.99. June 1st, the regular registration price will begin at $74.99. Two weeks prior to the conference, on July 22, late date pricing begins at $99.99.
Q: What type of writing will the conference focus on?
A: We put a strong focus on fiction, especially young adult novels. However, we’ll still have lots of cool resources for learning about nonfiction, short stories, poetry, songwriting, memoirs, etc., so check us out if you write any of those, too!
Q: Who will teach the sessions at the 2017 conference?
A: Ch1Con speakers are young writers, just like you. They’re currently at varying stages in their writing careers, and all are experts in the field.
Q: When will registration open for attending Ch1Con?
A: Registration is open now!
Q: Do I need to purchase books from the official Ch1Con retailer, After-Words New and Used Books, in order to attend the signing after the conference?
A: If you don’t already own the books for the signing, we would prefer that you purchase your copies through After-Words (because they’re wonderful). But also feel free to bring your own copies from home!
Q: If I order my books for the signing through the order form on the After-Words website, how and when will I receive them?
A: At the beginning of the signing, you’ll have the opportunity to pay for and pick up your purchased books.
Q: There’s a lunch break in the middle of the conference. What are my options for lunch?
A: We’ll be setting up a group order with Jimmy John’s, to be delivered to the conference room. If you’re not into that kind of food, you can bring food from home instead.
Q: I still have more questions. Can I contact you?
A: Of course! You can leave your questions in a comment on this page, contact us through our Facebook page, tweet at us, or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. We promise to get back to you faster than Bella Swan falls in love with Edward! (So pretty darn fast.)
